When Should I Have My Senior Portraits Taken?

Your senior year is so important. It is your final year in high school, and a year of transition into your next steps in life. Some of you may be moving to a four year college shortly after receiving your diploma, or getting a 2 year technical degree, have jobs lined up, plans to join the military etc! Either way, it is an exciting year full of so many great memories. Your weekends will probably be packed with seeing friends, attending sporting events and enjoying your final year of high school. With a very busy schedule, you may be thinking about how to schedule your senior portrait session- and when you should schedule it for.

Personally, I think any season can create beautiful portraits and I never want anyone to feel limited, but would always recommend having your senior pictures taken the summer BEFORE your senior year. So planning a little ahead of time is a good place to start. Research local senior portrait photographers to see if they fit your style and needs first. So prepare a few questions to ask them ahead of time.

After you have chosen your senior portrait photographer, you can start planning ideas with them. We personally do an in person meeting with seniors and one of their parents (or guardians) at a local coffee shop to chat about fun ideas like locations- outfit ideas - any hair and makeup needs and goals. If you do need a makeup artist we can make a few local recommendations to you. Of course if you do go that route, You would want to make sure your appointment ends about an hour before your photoshoot begins. You’ll want to give yourself some time between, so you don't feel rushed and stressed.

If summertime doesn’t work out for you personally, fall works as a great alternative (before winter break). We totally understand how appealing fall foliage can be in portraits. The color options you have for outfits in the fall is also amazing- so you really can't go wrong with a fall photoshoot either! Fall is still plenty early enough to plan with your photographer on creating amazing graduation announcements as well!

We hope this short write-up has helped you in some of your planning for your senior portrait photography. If you have any questions- feel free to email us at info@jimcphotography.com.
